Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) is a disorder characterized by an increase in the size of the prostate that affects over 50% of men in their 60s, 70% of men in their seventies and almost 90% by the age of 90. This problem is characterized by abnormal pressure on the bladder and which causes characteristic urination disorders (such as intermittent flow, incomplete emptying of the bladder, tenderness, frequent urination, stones in the bladder, and urinary tract infections) which causes are not yet well understood. The annoying and discomforting symptomatology concerns: – weak urine flow; – feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder (urine residue which also exposes to infections); – frequent need to urinate; – frequent nocturnal awakenings; – possible prostatitis; – kidney disorders. PROSTATA is a food supplement designed to improve the functionality of the prostate and urinary tract, based on: Serenoa Repens, Pigeo Africano, with the addition of Lycopene and Selenium. Serenoa repens, also called Dwarf Palm, or Saw Palmetto, is a small palm tree, native to Western India and the Atlantic coast of North America. The Native Americans used the berries as food and as a cure for a wide variety of problems related to the urinary system and the reproductive system, which has now become very well known and used for this type of male problem. The extract of Serenoa repens consists of fatty acids and phytosterols that promote the health and functionality of the prostate due to the following mechanisms of action: – beta-sitosterol inhibits 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme essential for the transformation of testosterone into di-hydrotestosterone (DHT), which affects benign prostatic hypertrophy; – the fatty acids contained (lauric and myristic acid), interact with testosterone forming esters, preventing the transformation of the hormone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT); – favors the blocking of alpha-adrenergic receptors, providing a muscle relaxant and spasmolytic action; – inhibits mechanisms of action concerning inflammation.
The African Pigeo is a plant of African origin rich in phytosterols, fatty acids and antioxidants, which proves to be a valid remedy for inflammation of the prostate typical of old age, where it proves to be a real panacea in decreasing inflammation , in addition to increasing bladder elasticity, even if its most interesting activity would be that of blocking also the 5-alpha reductase on the conversion into DHT but also of the armatase for the conversion into estrogen in the prostate gland.
Lycopene is a carotenoid on which the red color of tomatoes, pink grapefruit, apricot and watermelon depend, with an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory effect for various parts of the body, in particular for the prostate (where it tends to accumulate) and also favor a protective activity against prostate cancer. Selenium is an important trace element for the functionality of many enzymes (see glutathione-peroxidase) essential to counteract free radicals, the deficiency of which has a greater incidence in developing prostate cancer.
