Supplements During Ramadan: The Complete UAE Athlete Guide

Table of Contents

Muslim athlete with protein supplements preparing for Ramadan training session in UAE gym

Ramadan is the most demanding month of the year for athletes in the UAE. Your eating window shrinks to a few hours between iftar and suhoor. Your training shifts to late evening or early morning. Your energy, hydration and recovery are all affected. This guide covers exactly what to take, when to take it, and what to skip — based on Yamamoto Nutrition’s product range and sports nutrition principles.

How Ramadan changes your nutritional needs

During Ramadan, you fast for 14–16 hours per day. Your body has no glucose coming in, so it gradually shifts to burning stored glycogen and then fat for fuel. After several hours, muscle breakdown begins if protein and amino acids are not available. By iftar, your body is primed to absorb nutrients rapidly — which works in your favour if you time things correctly.

The key challenges for active people during Ramadan are: protein intake (hitting your daily target in a compressed window), hydration (replacing fluids and electrolytes without drinking during the day), sleep quality (disrupted by late meals and suhoor), and muscle preservation (limiting catabolism during the fast).

The best supplements for Ramadan — and when to take them

At iftar — fast absorption is the priority

Your body has been in a fasted state for 14+ hours. The first 30–60 minutes after iftar are the highest-priority window for supplements.

  • AminoDEX® POWDER (EAAs) — Take 10–15 g at iftar before your main meal. Essential amino acids absorb faster than whole protein and immediately signal muscle protein synthesis. Using Ajipure® amino acids from Ajinomoto means the highest purity and fastest uptake available.
  • Legionarius intra-workout — If you train in the evening, sip this during your session. It combines EAAs, electrolytes and citrulline — everything your body needs to perform and stay hydrated during fasted or semi-fasted training.
  • Electrolytes / HydraTECH — Rehydration after a long fast is not just about water. Sodium, potassium and magnesium all need replacing. Take an electrolyte supplement with your first glass of water at iftar.

After your evening meal — performance and recovery

  • Iso-FUJI® Volactive® Whey Isolate — After your main iftar meal, a whey isolate shake adds high-quality protein with minimal fat and lactose. Fast-absorbing and ideal for muscle repair after training.
  • Creatine (Crea POWDER) — 3–5 g daily, taken with iftar. Creatine loading is not affected by fasting; consistency is what matters. It supports strength, power and cell hydration.
  • Pre-workout — If you train after iftar (the most common approach during Ramadan), take your pre-workout 20–30 minutes before your session. Kamikaze or SayanFUEL STIM both work well in this window.

At suhoor — slow release through the fast

  • Infusion ELITE (Casein/PeptoPro blend) — Casein protein is slow-digesting and releases amino acids over several hours. Taking it at suhoor is one of the most effective strategies for limiting muscle catabolism during the fasting day. The micellar casein in Infusion ELITE continues feeding your muscles for 5–7 hours after you take it.
  • Vitamin D — UAE residents are commonly deficient in vitamin D despite the sunshine, because most time is spent indoors. Take it at suhoor with a fat-containing meal for best absorption.
  • Magnesium — Magnesium is depleted through sweat and is involved in hundreds of metabolic processes. Taking it at suhoor (or before sleep) supports sleep quality, muscle function and energy metabolism.
  • ZmaPRO (Zinc, Magnesium, B6) — The classic ZMA formula taken before sleep supports recovery, sleep depth and hormonal balance. During Ramadan, take it after tarawih prayers before sleep.

Supplements to avoid during Ramadan

Some supplements are counterproductive or impractical during a fasting month:

  • High-stimulant pre-workouts in the early morning — If you train before suhoor ends, avoid heavy caffeine. It raises cortisol further when the body is already stressed by fasting. Use a stimulant-free pre-workout instead.
  • Fat burners / thermogenics — Thermogenic supplements raise body temperature and increase water loss. During Ramadan fasting hours in the UAE, this accelerates dehydration. Skip them until after Ramadan.
  • Mass gainers during the fast — These are high-calorie products designed for a caloric surplus. Use them at iftar or suhoor only if your goal is gaining mass; otherwise the extra calories are unnecessary.

Training during Ramadan: when to work out

There are three common training windows during Ramadan, each with different supplement implications:

  • After iftar (most popular) — You have had food and can supplement fully. Best for performance. Train 60–90 minutes after your main meal, use a pre-workout 20–30 minutes before.
  • Before iftar (fasted training) — The hardest option, but effective for fat loss. Use EAAs during the session to limit muscle breakdown. Keep training shorter and less intense than normal.
  • After suhoor — Possible if you train early, but sleep quality suffers. Not recommended unless your schedule forces it.

How much protein do you need during Ramadan?

Your protein target does not change during Ramadan. For active people, 1.6–2.2 g of protein per kg of body weight per day is the standard recommendation. If you weigh 80 kg, that is 128–176 g of protein daily — all of which has to come from iftar to suhoor.

This is where supplements become essential rather than optional. It is very difficult to eat 150+ g of protein from whole foods in a 4–6 hour window without supplementation. A whey isolate shake at iftar and a casein shake at suhoor easily adds 50–60 g of protein and makes the target achievable.
