Yamamoto® Research Melatovil is a melatonin-based dietary supplement.
Melatonin, also known as the “sleep hormone,” is a water-soluble hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle. We all produce it daily, starting from serotonin, and its synthesis mainly occurs in the dark, in the pineal gland (or epiphysis) located in the brain. Some foods naturally contain melatonin, but only in very small amounts.
Its production is influenced by several factors, the main ones being light, age, diet, and the presence of other hormones. As previously explained, light inhibits melatonin production, which is instead stimulated only during the night: when light reaches the retina, a signal is sent to the pineal gland to block its secretion. Age also plays a significant role, as melatonin production gradually decreases over time due to the calcification of the pineal gland. Excessive caffeine and stress can also limit its synthesis. Therefore, it’s easy to understand why supplementation might be necessary in some cases.
Melatonin is commonly used for its support in reducing the time needed to fall asleep (the beneficial effect is obtained by taking 1 mg of melatonin shortly before bedtime). It has proven particularly effective in helping people fall asleep, as it works by restoring the body’s biological rhythms (circadian rhythms).
It also helps alleviate the effects of jet lag (the beneficial effect is achieved by taking at least 0.5 mg shortly before bedtime on the first day of travel and for a few days after arrival at the destination), and its effectiveness in this regard has been well documented. Jet lag affects frequent travelers, and melatonin helps to reset the internal biological clockdisrupted by time zone changes.
Several studies suggest that 1 to 2 mg of melatonin is enough to restore optimal blood levels of this hormone. For this reason, we recommend taking 20 drops (1 ml) once daily, either on its own or diluted in water, in the evening before going to bed.
Directions for use: 20 drops per day (equal to 1 ml), pure or diluted in water, in the evening before going to bed.
