Creatine (from the Greek κρέας = meat) is an amino acid derivative naturally present in the body. Its concentration increases as muscle mass increases. It is found in foods of animal origin, but is also produced by the body’s liver, kidneys and pancreas. Once it has been synthesised or taken in through diet or supplementation, it is taken up by muscle tissue and stored in the muscles. Creatine is one of the muscle’s energy stores, used for rapid and intense muscle contractions. From a metabolic point of view, it is used to meet the demands of alactacidic anaerobic metabolism.

In sports it is used as an ergogenic support, but it also has antioxidant and cardioprotective effects.
